5 Steps to Get Started in Burlesque

I love when audience members or fans approach me and ask how to get involved in Burlesque. Our community is very accepting of new supporters and performers, but there are certain ways that will rocket you to the top of the newbie ladder very quickly, if your goal is to get on the stage with us.

Here's a quick 5-step guide to getting involved in the scene!
- This should work no matter where you are, not just in Toronto. If you're from a city with a small or non-existent scene, more of your research will be online-based, but it can be done!

1. See Some Shows!
  • This should be obvious! You need to see the shows in the community and become familiar with your local performers! Go see and be seen! Take a moment after the show to compliment the producer or the performers that you liked and introduce yourself! Try not to do this before the show, as some showgirls (and boys) need to get into their headspace and may have a long list of things to do.
It's important to support the community in burlesque if you want the community to support you in return. Believe me, you do.

Burlesque is such a community-driven industry, and that (not the money) is one of the reasons I believe so many people are involved. You should never stop supporting other performers, and in return they will be the happiest, most encouraging, and possibly the most fulfilling supporters of you!

If you need to find shows to see in Toronto, take a look at my website! I produce three or four a month. There is also most definitely a meetup group, Facebook group, or other such thing in your city. Make use of it! Pick up flyers at shows you attend! Add the performers you like on Facebook or Twitter and take a look at what they're up to!

2. Do Your Research!
  • You should know what burlesque really is, and was, before you throw yourself into it. Never test the water with both high heels! Part of this is helped by seeing a variety of local shows, as stated above. Another amazing resource, no matter how amazing or empty your local scene is, is Youtube. Thousands of performances are available for you to watch and analyze, and you should do this throughout your burlesque career!
While the current burlesque scene and how to get into it may be your primary concern, you must learn about its roots. You don't need to be an expert (though the information is far more entertaining than the rest of history class tends to be) but you should know where burlesque came from, who Bettie Page, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Lili St Cyr are, and definitely MORE than that.

There are a ton of books, websites, and movies that you can take a look at for this. Take a gander at good 'ole Wikipedia or pick up some of my favourite books and movies on the Amazon sidebar.

Also take a look at the Burlesque Hall of Fame and some major burlesque news websites like my favourite: 21st Century Burlesque.

3. Find a Teacher!
  • Yes you need lessons. You don't have to be an amazing, classically trained dancer. You don't need to have a history in theatre. You don't need to take a university course. However, a lady taking a single ballet class and calling herself a ballet dancer is ridiculous. Burlesque is similar. Any performance background will help you, and while dancing skill is not necessarily needed on stage, grace and rhythm will only help you!
Find a local teacher who understands burlesque* and who is experienced enough to be teaching. The more experience and travel and professionalism (website, business cards, etc) your teacher displays, the better. Many cities have a burlesque school. The Toronto School of Burlesque is our local school. We have has been known to bring in outside teachers such as Ray Gunn, Dangrrr Doll, and Bettina May! New York has Jo 'Boobs' Weldon, Chicago has Michelle L'amour, there are plenty of classes you can take!

www.torontoschoolofburlesque.com

Your teacher may be able to connect you with a mentor, or become your mentor themselves. Take every opportunity to learn possible. Take dance classes (jazz and ballet, or maybe even the Pussycat Doll style burlesque classes to get 'sexy movement' down), take improv classes, take clowning or circus classes. The more you know the more you can apply to your stage persona and technique.
Performers who are constantly learning start from a strong base. I myself took lessons with Coco Framboise for about a year and a half before getting on stage. I was also a gogo dancer, ballroom dancer, theatre nerd, and more before getting interested in burlesque. You don't have to have previous stage experience, but you do have to learn. Believe me that you can tell the difference between performers who take learning opportunities and those who don't.

You can also learn from books, Youtube, and videos if a teacher in not available to you, or you can make the yearly pilgrimage to BurlyCon and learn from some of the top performers in burlesque. I'll see you there!

4. Volunteer!
  • Once you've seen a few shows, taken some classes, and learned what burlesque really is, approach some of the friends you've made and ask about opportunities to volunteer! There are many positions you could fill.
Stage Kittening is a very solid and great place to start. The job of the stage kitten is to set and clear the stage between performer's acts. This will give you a chance to learn more about who's who in the shows you're working, and get a backstage view of the shows. I stage kittened quite a bit starting out, and it's also a relatively easy job to excel at! Pay attention, smile, and be cute!

Merchandise and door tables are other chances to help out. Either the producer, or the merchant themselves, might need a little help here. Money is involved so you need to make sure you're comfortable with that level of responsibility.

Approach people you would like to help and offer away! Sometimes you can leave yourself open for whatever they may need you to do, but if you have special skills feel free to offer them up. Are you good at graphics, twitter, organizing or decorating? Make that known!

Do not expect to get paid for volunteering, but don't play down the importance of your position. If you're reliable and a hard worker, your work is worth some value. Whether this is monetary or networking, or something else, is up to you and your temporary employer to decide.

5. Practice!
  • Take your time between classes and show to practice moves and develop a routine. Always always rehearse. Even performers who have been doing this for ages rehearse. You may find that you like to strongly choreograph yours acts, or that you prefer loose choreography with defined moments, such as a glove at this point, followed by the next glove during the chorus, etc.
Practice and rehearsal are what set apart sub par performers from the stars. You can refine and polish your act and dedicate your time to doing the best possible act you can. Record your act with a digital camera or your computer, and watch it! Change and play.

When your teacher or your producer contacts decide you're ready for the stage you will have a set of skills to start building an act, or an act already polished and waiting to go! The videos will also give you something to show for your work!

There you have it! Some links and resources for you to get started in burlesque, no matter what city you're in!

Do you have some more videos or places to link? Suggest them in the comments!

Babes in Space - Reviews and Reflection!

Babes in Space has come and gone again. For those who don't know (how could you not?) Babes in Space is my yearly Star Trek vs Star Wars burlesque show. For the last two years we've run double shows, which I've discovered is actually much easier and more fulfilling than running a single show!

El Toro, Kinky Biskit, and Charlie Quinn as Ewoks
This year the theme was 3-DD and I like to think we entertained in ALL dimensions! With singing, dancing, ewoks, cupcakes, aerialists, and some high profile audience members (like Playboy illustrator Doug Sneyd!) it was a packed show both nights!

Daytona Bitch as Princess Leia
This show has always been plagued with controversy, duplicates, and last minute 'Augh' factors...and this year was no different. The biggest hurdle this year was trying to figure out whether the show would have its customary booth at FanExpo, Toronto's largest nerd convention. Despite registration back in January, I didn't actually know if I had a table until a few weeks before the show. Luckily, I was able to share a space with The Comic Book Lounge, since despite my early registration I apparently did NOT have a position.

Coco Framboise as Uhura
The convention went well, despite the fact that the late notice meant I had no actualy merchandise beyond some prints and pasties to sell at the table. We sell a lot of tickets at the convention, but unfortunately that doesn't go towards covering the high table cost! It goes straight to production costs and performer pay.

That being said, the success of the show always makes the hurdles of putting it on worth it.

Nasty Canasta as Darth Vader
I had the privilege of booking Nasty Canasta, one of NYC's biggest (and most hilarious) performers. Nasty had been incredibly welcoming in my July trip to NYC (despite being under the weather and very busy) and I was happy to have her and her Darth Vader booty on my stage.
Here's a few shots from the show, and a video with clips and  reviews from the first night!

And a review from the wonderful of Moony on Theatre:

What I was expecting is top-notch dancing with imaginative, lascivious, if not humorously sexual, choreography. This is precisely what I got.

The whole group!
Melody Merlot as an Orion Slave Girl

Percy Katt as Captain Picard
Charlie Quinn as a Storm Trooper

Epic Win Burlesque - Featuring Red Herring!

EPIC WIN Burlesque presents...The New Nerdlesque Review!

Which means, ladies and gentlemen, I am going to New York City!

No, I've never been to the Big Apple before. Yes, I'm incredibly flattered and excited to be performing there as a headliner for this show. Nelson Lugo, the hot for the night and the producer for EPIC WIN, has been an online friend and nerd-minded buddy for a while now.

I am jazzed.

The performers in this show, for the most part, have only been in the burlyq scene for a year or less and all of them lovingly embrace their very nerdy interests.

Come and hoot, holler and cheer for the newest and hottest nerds to hit the stage!

Ottawa Burlesque Road Trip - 5th Annual No Pants Dance Party

Earlier this month Mz Kitty Demure and I were invited to perform with Rockalily Burlesque in the 5th Annual No Pants Dance Party! All the way in Ottawa, Ontario! Or, as I call it, 'The Frenchland'

Of course, this requires a bit of a road trip. And, as I seem to do during road trips, I felt the need to film!

The trip was amazing, and I'm pleased to report that no cars were wrecked or towed! Of course, this video may contain drinking, shenanigans, no pants, and hot women.

You've been warned.

GEAR BOX: A Steampunk Burlesque - Photos

Red Herring Productions teamed up with Les Coquettes and Canadian Steam Productions to provide you with a show sure to get your gears grinding!

This was an amazing show for me to produce and I feel so honoured that I had the company of so many amazing performers and crew on stage and off. Here are some photos from what is one of Toronto's only fully-plotted burlesque shows!

Percy Katt as the mad scientist

Eve of Destruction as the experiment

JD Spark as the cat burgler

Tsuki Tsunami as a cabaret performer

Obskyura as a cabaret performer

A review from Edward Williamson

Red Herring really knows how to entertain the masses. If you have the opportunity to attend one of her events, I do highly recommend you take that opportunity. Not only does she find the best acts in the land, but she also finds the best venues with the friendliest staff.

It is always nice to see familiar faces and old friends, but I do also enjoy meeting new people. With Gearbox being tied to the convention circuit, Red did an excellent job of bringing in new faces. I do believe I spoke to as many people who don't attend conventions as I did convention attendees. A most superb turnout, indeed.

What is BurlyCon?

You need to go.

I'm just going to write that there before dumping any more information on you, so you get it. Do you get it? Do you understand?

If you are a burlesque performer, or want to be a performer, or are involved in the burlesque scene in a large way...you really need to attend this event. And if it's not 'for you' to attend? You need to promote it to every performer that you know.

BurlyCon is the only annual Burlesque Educational convention that I know of. No shows, no competitions, just pure, old fashioned learnin'!

From the site:
Our aim is to further the development and historical knowledge of this rare American art form that is experiencing a popular resurgence worldwide. Unlike other Festivals and Expos that highlight Burlesque performance, this weekend-long gathering contains no show and no audience. Rather, all activities at BurlyCon are focused on the behind-the-scenes components of Burlesque: building skills, deepening knowledge, and growing as a community.             ~ BurlyCon

BurlyCon is coming up in November, from the 1st to the 4th. That may seem like a ways off, but the deals for tickets started months ago. I advise you get in on it now!

They also have payment plans available! More information and registration options are AVAILABLE HERE!

BurlyCon 2011 class photo, by Don Spiro
You get four days of expert instruction, over 100 classes to choose from, and teachers like Alotta Boutté, Ophelia Flame, and Peekaboo Pointe
Keep an eye on their website for more updates, or sign up for their newsletter!
Will I see you there?

Red Herring Burlesque - SCANDALOUS!

Pardon me while I come down from the high, hustle, and bustle of producing. How will I ever survive without the adrenaline rush?

Oh no wait, I've got a show next week. No worries. (Gah!)

SCANDALOUS! Tabloid themed burlesque was this past Sunday at Revival Nightclub here in chilly Toronto. It was my first real foray into co-producing, with the lovely Toni Wallachy of Pink Panther Studios, as well as my first show under associate producers Les Coquettes.

It was also hilarious and potentially illegal in the Good Times factor.

Here's the pre-show trailer by Spanish Fly Films, to remind you:

And here's a picture by the previously mentioned wonderful Toni, who ran a workshop on live event photography during the show.

Me! Red Herring by Orangeroads Photography
Here are a few photos below while we wait on the edited shots from the whole shebang!

Brook Alviano, our merch girl and costume designer

Bianca Boom Boom and Charlie Quinn as our Raffle Girls

Our aerialist JD Spark gets stretchy backstage

Mahogany Storm of Boylesque TO works on his strut.

Mark Boyer of 3BArtistry does some primping

Mahogany Storm and Les Coquettes/Boylesque TO's Dew Lily discuss perfectly mundane things.

Obskyura gets ready for her impressive-as-hell 15foot red carpet act.

More photos and recap coming soon! Now to prep for Reveal Me at the Rivoli, April!

2011 in Review!

2011 was a whirlwind year for me, and now that it's at a close I finally have a chance to look back over what I've accomplished and what still needs to be done in the coming year.

This year I made the decision to roll with the punches and layoffs and try to manage a self-employed career involving burlesque and some of my other talents. I'm hoping I can keep that up in 2012!

Image from weheartit.com

Productions:

I produced two shows this year, and helped out with a few others. Ladies in Red was the first show of the year, at Cherry Cola's Rock 'N Rolla. The show went spectacularly, and I am so happy to have had a chance to work with the girls who have become a staple in my cast for producing. Also on this show was the debut of Izzy Ridged, aka Joey Arrigo who you may know from So You Think You Can Dance Canada. The drama following this show was disappointing and I found myself losing faith in the community due to the behaviour of some jealous people but it's best to ignore it and move forward, and that's what I did and will continue to do!

Babes in Space was another resounding success! My Star Trek vs Star Wars burlesque show sold out both nights of its show and received several positive reviews, as well as TV spots with Naked News and Cosmo TV. I'm so thankful to the audience and my performers for pulling out all the stops to make this show amazing, and to my friends who worked their pert asses off at FanExpo to help with the booth.

I've come to expect drama surrounding productions. Babes in Space was dogged by a very similar pair of productions by a group that had originally stated that they were aiming to promote and contribute to their community. Originally. I've removed myself from their association and the success of my event speaks for itself.

I've learned to guard my productions a little bit more seriously heading forward, and to consider those who I am making partnerships with more carefully. There are a lot of unscrupulous people that I simply do not need to waste time on. I will continue to surround myself with inspiring and talented people who don't feel the need to bully others to get ahead. Lead by example and all! Both shows were great success and moving forward with that will be my main goal!

Babes in Space group finale, photo by Chris Suppa

Shows:

I've had a chance to perform and play with a load of amazing people this year! The highlight was the recent show with my teacher Coco Framboise. Performing with Armitage Shanks and the whole cast was stellar.

The Toronto Burlesque Festival seemed to whip by this year and I really wish I had more of a chance to throw myself into the crowd! My performance on Sunday was both less and MORE stressful than performing at the beginning of the 2010 festival. Last year I was the Thursday opening act, and able to enjoy the rest of the weekend with the pressure off (though the pre-performance pressure was insane!). This year I had a load of other performances in my head and nervous anticipation leading up to the show! But the environment was great and I was in the first set so I got to see the rest of the performances. I was also able to write up the first few days of the festival for 21st Century Burlesque, and you can check out my diary over there!

Impromptease is probably my favourite regular show, both for the reason that its producers are brilliant, and the show is a ball of hilarity. I was also able to perform at Comedy Bar again, which was a bit nostalgic as that's the bar where I did my first burlesque performance!

Learning:

I was able to take quite a few classes this year, and I hope I can continue that into the new year. Coco's classes are a regular thing for me, and I was excited to take lessons from Burgundy Brixx and Jett Adore (whom I got to interview later). Through her I was also able to learn from Minnie Tonka and Armitage Shanks (who was brilliant, as usual).

Other classes I was able to take included a series of circus classes with my trainer through Centre of Gravity. I hope to focus more on my aerial skills in 2012, since quite a few things got in my way this year! I managed to make some progress on vocal classes with my sexy teacher, but due to time and cash I also had to let those slide. Again, something I want to pursue more responsibly in 2012! I also took some dace classes with Carla Catharwood, and though her idea of burlesque is at odds with mine (PussyCat Dolls style vs Strip Tease, which is a whole other blog post) she's an amazing dancer and a great teacher. I'd like to take more classes from her in the future.

A major class I took with the Hourglass Workout with Lyzabeth Lopez. This is a really hardcore women-only bootcamp focused on creating and enhancing an hourglass figure. I lost 15lb and about 15 inches over the course of the her classes, and made huge increases in strength. I'm continuing these classes in 2012, and you should too.

People:

I met some great people this year and furthered some previously existing relationships.

Toni Wallachy of Pink Panther Studios was a great connection and we've done amazing work together (and I hope to continue to do so).

Brook Alviano has continued to make some amazing costumes for me and others, and was indispensable with Kinky Biscuit (an upcoming star) during Babes in Space and the insanity there.

Tatiana of Spanish Fly Films has been incredible at filming and editing some amazing trailers, and I've got a load of work for her in the new year!

Coco Framboise stepped in near the end of the year and has been amazing, despite her busy schedule.

Kinky Biscuit, Toni Wallachy, and Tatiana in Windsor

I've learned a lot about how to keep positive influences close and disregard the negative ones that come out, and I'm going to try to get better at this in 2012.

The Future!

2012 already has a ton of things underway. I've been running in circles throughout December trying to get moving on projects that don't have dates yet. Of course, without dates, I have nowhere to go!

I'm really excited for the productions I have lined up for the new year! You can expect another Babes in Space from me some time around FanExpo. I will also be coproducing with the amazing Toni Wallachy of Pink Panther Studios , and have another show in the works with another infamous (and dapper) colleague that I'm incredibly excited about.

My monthly show is an experiment that will be launching February1st (stay tuned for more news!) and I have plans being made to attend Miss Exotic World in Las Vegas during the summer, and BurlyCon (finally!) in the fall.

With my passport renewal underway I'm excited to explore performance opportunities across the border and maybe even overseas!

That being said, obviously production is a major push for me this coming year. I'm hoping to continue my streak of sold-out shows! No pressure.

With my employment situation transforming from corporate salary to self-run business, I'll be looking for multiple opportunities to expand my social media clientele and taking some time to teach myself more tips and tricks in this area. Even though I feel I'm strong in this category, I'm all about staying on top of learning!

This blog will be undergoing a mini-makeover with some expansion into advertising, and I'm hoping to push forward on my Youtube page as well! My website needs an overhaul. This'll be a top priority for me.

As for my performances, I would like to audit my current acts and work on 'upping' their 'wow' factor. Less acts, higher quality! There are two festival style acts that I have buzzing in my head, and I'd like to refine my plane act as well.

Basically, more more more for this coming year!

Here's to 2012!

Holiday Burlesque - Coco Framboise, Armitage Shanks, and more!

This holiday season was one burlesque event after the next! I don't think I had a chance to stop and enjoy the 'holidays' until I left Toronto on the train on the 24th!

However, the rehearsals and meetings and events were fun and definitely worth it.

I had the pleasure of working with Coco Framboise, my teacher and mentor, and took advantage of the chance to pack my mind with a ton of tips and tricks she uses to stay cool and classy during a month that was even more hectic than mine.

I also took advantage of the workshop class Coco ran with Armitage Shanks. This is the second one I've attended by him, and his format really encourages experimentation and learning. It really was amazing to learn from him, but also to learn from the other members in the class and how they executed his challenges, and what it took inside my own head to complete my portion of the workshop.

I'm trying to pull some of the attitude I displayed on poor Coco's lap into the act I'm doing tonight! We'll see how it goes!

Up Your Chimney: A Holiday Spanktacular, was an amazing show surrounded by hectic circumstances. There were many other events bracketing the show for Coco Framboise, including a huge personal inconvenience, a dashing out-of-town guest in Armitage (who was amazingly organized and amusing all times I saw him despite the busy schedule), and something like eleven gigs on her table.

Here are some backstage photos from show night!

Some components of the costume Lady Bonah, Coco Framboise and myself fabricated for our act.

Everyone pulled together to put on this show, and it was spanktacular to be able to work with such talented and sexy people who I've known and admired for a while. The show was a blast, and I had some dear friends in the audience who I were so happy could make it!
